This is a gaming mouse; let’s just get this out of the way. I have owned my Logitech MX518 Optical Gaming Mouse for over two years now and haven’t had one problem. The Logitech MX518 Optical Gaming Mouse is great for gaming, regular use, or what you can think of. The best feature of this mouse is the ability to change DPI setting right out of the box and on the fly. If you were to simply plug this into a computer without Set Point you have the ability to use 3 DPI settings of 400, 800, and 1800 DPI.

When you load up Set Point you gain the ability to use 5 different DPI settings.  Now you can also install Logitech G-Series Gaming software which can be found on the Logitech MX518 Optical Gaming Mouse page. With this software you have the ability to set profiles for normal use and you games. Now the G-Series Gaming software was meant to be used with ‘G’ mice, but Logitech was nice enough to put in support for our Logitech MX518 Optical Gaming Mouse.

Now let us see what else the Logitech MX518 Optical Gaming Mouse has to offer. Along with your DPI on the fly adjustment buttons you have a  forward and back buttons, left, right, and middle clock. The button below the DPI adjustment down out of the box is a program switch button. Thought the G-series gaming software I have changed that to set it back to my default DPI. This brings up another point in the software giving you complete control to tell the buttons on this mouse what to do. It even goes so far as being able to record a macro of sorts.

You can also have Windows give an audible sound when you change DPI but you have to go assign it in Windows; this feature is not on by default.

This mouse will work on pretty much any surface but it shines on a gaming mat. It works very well on a $2 mouse pad you might still be using. The mouse cord on the Logitech MX518 Optical Gaming Mouse is about 6 Ft so you have pretty of length to work with.  The ergonomics of the mouse are about as perfect as you can get. My hand rest very comfortable and I have no issues using this mouse for hours at a time. Then you have the looks; Logitech did an outstanding job of giving this mouse something people will look at with its dented in cover plate. While this mouse is mainly made of plastic it doesn’t feel cheap. Everything on the Logitech MX518 Optical Gaming Mouse feels sturdy and like unless you did just chunk it against a brick wall it will last for years. Logitech stands behind this mouse with a 3 year warranty and I can see why. As I stated earlier I have had this mouse for over 2 years and have yet to have a single problem.

Now for what I’m sure you have been waiting for this how this preforms in-game. I personally play first person shooters more than anything.  The last games I have played are Battlefield 3, Assassin’s Creed 3, and Far cry 3.

Playing Battlefield 3 this mouse functions awesomely. I like to snipe and run around. When sniping I love the fact I can run around with a pistol at a high DPI then when i’m ready to settle down and get into a sniping position with a click of a button ive lowered my DPI and can move over pixels to get that head shot at 1000+ meters, then get back up and have full control over how fast I can look around. If I can using a different class I can change the settings accordingly but it really shines when you are sniping to get your shot perfectly lined up. With Assassin’s Creed 3 and Far Cry you have the same control also. You can turn on a dime and be able to engage your enemy with prejudice.

The conclusion of this mouse is that for a normal gamer or even hardcore gamer this mouse just works. It may not have the extra buttons or spiffy looks of newer mice but it just work flawlessly. Currently this mouse is not in production anymore although sites like Amazon.com you can still buy it from them. I know Logitech has brought out the G400 to replace the MX518 and hopefully we will be able to get one in the lab to test so I do not want to speculate on if it is better or not. Currently this mouse is not in production anymore although sites like Amazon.com or this that you can still buy it from them.  I wouldn’t run out and buy one just yet if you have the MX518. The Logitech MX518 Optical Gaming Mouse is a battle proven mouse. The only thing that some people thinks this lacks is a higher DPI. At 1800 DPI this can go pretty fast and most people would not need something faster.
