XFX Radeon HD 6870 Double D Benchmarked

XFX Radeon HD 6870 Double D Benchmarked

Since we did benchmarks on our 7000 series graphic cards we also decided to benchmark one of our older cards. This benchmark is going to be on the XFX Radeon HD 6870 Double D. The Double D stands for double dissipate to get the heat off the card. This card was one of the better cards for the 6000 series in general. With a clock speed of 900Mhz and memory speed of 1050Mhz the XFX Radeon HD 6870 did pretty well.

Metro 2033

The card was definately playable at all levels but with AA on at very high we did have out issues but once we got to high and medium it was smooth. You could feel a dip depending on what part of the game you were playing but overall it ran just fine on high or lower setting.

Battlefield 3

The benchmarks for the  XFX Radeon HD 6870 were actually better than I expected. When using this card for normal use I would typically run at ultra with no AA. When AA was enabled it did bog down but not horribly. While I would not recommend using AA all the time Battlefield 3 was definitely playable on all setting without AA and most with.

Farcry 3

Far Cry 3 put this card on its knees. Trying to run Ultra with AA we almost did not get our test done. As you can see we did not even get a max FPS above 30. This is an older mid-range 6000 series card so this was expected. Obviously one of the problems with this card is with AA, it just can not handle it well. When we took AA off and ran on Ultra is was playable but not always smooth. It was not until using Very High and below that 95% of the time we did not notice any hiccups. Overall the XFX Radeon HD 6870 did well enough on most the settings without AA.

After doing the benchmarks the XFX Radeon HD 6870 Double D does hold its own but has issues with AA. It can use low AA on higher setting but when you try to put high AA on and play the frame rates drop which is very evident with Far Cry 3. When you are playing without AA you can play at very high or ultra settings without really any issues in any of the games. At time you will notice it but it does not last for long. With the dual fan design heat is not an issue with this card even when stressed at 100% GPU load for long periods of time. As stated above it ran all three games well just except when you got into the higher settings with AA, otherwise the card is a champ for being the 4th best of the 6000 series behind the 6990, 6970, and the 6950. Cost of this card is currently about $200 from a store but you can find them on eBay around around $110 to $140.
