AMD Athlon X4 CPU build on Richland FM2 Platform Launch
Looking to build some quad core but on the cheap then start looking at the AMD Athlon X4 Richland CPU built for the FM2 socket. Basically these are APU’s but without the graphics. You will need your own discrete graphics card but will get the power of having a quad core CPU on the very capable FM2 socket. By cutting out the on-board graphics AMD has been able to cut their own cost and offer these cheaper than the APUs on the Richland platform. They compare to the FX-4XXX series that AMD launched for its AM3+ platform.
As far as to what AMD will be offering in this lineup it has been reported that the top CPU that will offered is going to be the the AMD Athlon X4 760K Black Edition. This quad core CPU will have a base clock at 3.8 Ghz and 4.1 Ghz turbo boost speed, unlocked multiplier for overclocking, and a 100 TDP for power. Rumors are that the price point on this CPU will be about $100. In comparison to the A10-6800k APU at $150 from both Amazon and Newegg. Also Amazon is selling this unnamed CPU which would probably be the AMD Athlon X4 750k with a stock number of AD750KWOHJBOX for $89.99.
While this chip is not going to set records in overclocking or benchmarks it does seem like a very solid CPU for a budget gaming rig, HTPC, or small server. The architecture this CPU runs off of is Piledriver with 2 modules and 4 cores on the Richland platform. It will support chipsets on the FM2 socket such as the A55, A75, and A85X. Other features will be 4 MB of L2 cache, PCIe 2 controllers, and support for up to 2133 Mhz DDR3 ram. We should be getting more information later on with pricing and other CPUs that will be in this line, but as I stated these would probably go great in a home server.
