There's a New Digital Store on the Block
Epic Games has decided to open up shop with their own digital game store. This move is really going to put pressure on Steam and Google alike thanks to the outrageous popularity of their massive hit Fortnite.
Epic Games is also known for their Unreal Engine, a popular game engine game developers have been using since 1995. Plus recently, the Unreal Engine has been gaining even greater traction with developers that have been remaking older classics that have turned out amazing results.
The Possibilities With The Epic Game Store Could Open Many Doors For Developers
The fact that Epic Games is opening up their own Game Store essentially means they are cutting out the middleman. With the sales of Fortnite, older titles, as well as any future games they have coming out, the Epic Games Store could be a big hit.
The biggest enticement for developers is that Epic is only going to take 12% in royalties vs. around 30% elsewhere. This means creators of other games will have more incentive to put their games in the store. Epic has made the move to outdo Steam by over half in potential earnings. Also, there are other incentives that could look tempting for anyone that wants to get better profits for their games. This will assuredly have Valve standing up and taking notice. In reality, Valve could have a major problem on their hands when it comes to game publishers.
Epic Games Store could become the biggest market for developers
Epic wants to include as many titles as possible to create a nice variety of choices for consumers that want all their games in one place. This is the main reason Steam has been more popular among gamers over Uplay and Origin respectively.
Not only is Epic trying to get the one up on Steam with offers to developers, but also with customers. This would enable them to have a closer relationship with developers allowing them to stay up to date with their favorite or future favorite titles.
Epic plans to open up shop in 2019 which may have Valve more than concerned.
