Best Free PC Games of the Month – March 2014

1. Warframe – Co-op TPS

Best Free PC Games: Warframe

Best Free PC Games: Warframe

“Warframe is a cooperative free-to-play online action game set in an evolving sci-fi world. Join your friends in player-vs-enemy raids across the solar system and master the power of the Warframes. Stand alone or fight together against enemies that threaten your world.”

In this awesome third-person shooter, you control Warframes: sci-fi-mech-warrior-robot-things with varying powers. A negative force is trying to take over the galaxy, and you need to stop it. I enjoyed that this game is very easy to get started with and allows you to choose your gameplay type. Whether you just want to run through killing as many baddies as you can, or spend time joining clans, customizing and building new weapons, exploring the galaxy, and unlocking the secrets of as many Warframes as you can, your wish will be granted. Customization is the name of the game in this shooter; colors, mods, and crafting new weapons are just a few of the many options in Warframe. The graphics leave little to be desired for a free-to-play game, and the gameplay/controls are fluid and familiar. Movement options also make gameplay fun, you can run across walls, slide, etc while killing enemies. The only complaints I and other players have is that the missions can get a little repetitive, and without paying to unlock more slots you are limited on the amount of Warframes you can have at once. But for what it is, Warframe is definitely worth your time and will likely suck you in after just the first mission. The game has only gotten better with each update, so it is exciting to see what Warframe will continue to develop into.

2. Meat Boy – Platformer

Best Free PC Games: Meat Boy

Best Free PC Games: Meat Boy

This is the game that spawned the now-popular Super Meat Boy. The premise is the same, you play as Meat Boy trying to save his lovely girlfriend Bandaid Girl. Like its successor and most other platformers, Meat Boy is easy to pick up but difficult to master. The simple gameplay makes this fun for all ages, but as an adult I often found myself yelling at the game (as I am wont to do with platformers) in frustration after multiple attempts to beat a level. It is unique, the levels are varied and well-designed, and the attention to detail is apparent even in this first iteration (the adorable meat-squishing noise every time you hit a surface is a lovely touch, along with the fun meat-related facts after you beat a level). The controls can be a little under-sensitive, but that’s about the only complaint I have with Meat Boy.

3. Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden – JRPG

Best Free PC Games: Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden

Best Free PC Games: Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden

This is overall an absolutely ridiculous, wonderful game that will make you laugh out loud by yourself. I won’t even bother going into detail, the official description should be enough to make you click download:

“The Great B-Ball Purge of 2041, a day so painful to some that it is referred to only as the “B-Ballnacht”. Thousands upon thousands of the world’s greatest ballers were massacred in a swath of violence and sports bigotry as the game was outlawed worldwide. The reason: the Chaos Dunk, a jam so powerful its mere existence threatens the balance of chaos and order. Among the few ballers and fans that survived the basketball genocide was Charles Barkley, the man capable of performing the “Verboten Jam”…

Flash forward 12 years to the post-cyberpocalyptic ruins of Neo New York, 2053. A Chaos Dunk rocks the island of Manhattan, killing 15 million. When the finger is put on the aging Charles Barkley, he must evade the capture of the B-Ball Removal Department, led by former friend and baller Michael Jordan, and disappear into the dangerous underground of the post-cyberpocalypse to clear his name and find out the mysterious truth behind the Chaos Dunk. Joined by allies along the way, including his son Hoopz, Barkley must face the dangers of a life he thought he gave up a long time ago and discover the secrets behind the terrorist organization B.L.O.O.D.M.O.S.E.S.”

So, yeah. Play it.

4. Warsow – FPS

Best Free PC Games: Warsow

Best Free PC Games: Warsow

“Set in a futuristic cartoonish world, Warsow is a completely free fast-paced first-person shooter (FPS) for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X”

If you are a fan of extremely fast paced shooters in the style of Quake, you should love Warsow. It lets you dash, dodge, double jump, bunny hop, rocket jump, and almost any other trick you can think of to collect items quickly and destroy your enemies. The visuals remind me of Borderlands; a graphic-novely, cartoonish futuristic setting that is very fitting. Getting better at Warsow requires fast fingers and mastery of movement tricks. This is another game that is easy to pick up, but very difficult to master. Warsow is also an e-sport and played competitively by some of the best players in the world. And kids are more than welcome too, the developers decided to ditch the blood and guts for pixelated hit markers. And the best part (for some) is there is no storyline to complete. Warsow is meant to just jump in and start playing, and I must say that it is a faster game competitively than any other I’ve played; this is not a game you can sit back and relax with.

The creators of Warsow also place importance on customization, so if you enjoy making mods and changing up gameplay you can look forward to these features:

  • Open source engine – freedom to make complete gameplay mods.
  • Easy scripting engine with Javascript/C++-like style syntax for making your own gametypes! (AngelScript)
  • Freedom to run your own servers (ranked servers will need server key, which we provide for free upon request!)
  • Flexible HUD scripting engine for customizing your HUD.
  • Powerful “e-sports”- features like Warsow TV with OGG audio stream support for providing improved streaming capabilities.
  • Highly customizable graphic settings.
  • Global stats and match result saving for following your matches.
  • Rich User Interface based on XHTML/CSS standards for layout and presentation and powerful scripting engine with Javascript/C++-like syntax.

5. Diaspora: Shattered Armistice – Flight/Space Combat

Best Free PC Games: Diaspora: Shattered Armistice

Best Free PC Games: Diaspora: Shattered Armistice

“A fan-made game inspired by the reimagined SyFy TV series, Battlestar Galactica, Diaspora is a single and multiplayer space fighter combat game set in the BSG universe. It has been 40 years since the devastating war between the Colonials and the Cylons. 40 years where no one has seen or heard of the Cylons. 40 years where the armistice has held … that peace ends now. Fly on either side of the combat — pilot a Viper, Raptor, Cylon Raider, Blackbird, or other fighter craft from the BSG universe — in single-player and multiplayer space dogfights.”

Heads up, Battlestar Galactica fans, this frakking game is for you! In Diaspora you can relive some of the greatest moments of the series from behind the pilot’s seat. Single and multiplayer options let you play with friends, and is welcome since the game is HARD. Definitely go through the tutorial as there are many controls to learn, and you will have to become an expert at them to progress. Expect to replay missions multiple times; but this only made victory that much sweeter. Even though this is a fan made game, the graphics and gameplay are impressive. The feel of the game is also superb and true to the series, battles are hectic and you will usually be racing to complete an objective before getting blown to pieces. Interesting side missions help to break up the crazy pace, however. Overall Diaspora is great for a free game and fans of Battlestar Galactica will enjoy it more than anyone; but if you love overcoming a hard learning curve and getting down in frantic space battles then you will surely love Diaspora: Shattered Armistice.

  1. Thank you, I appreciate that! In many of these “best free PC games” articles I try to search around for games that a lot of people may have not ever come across before. There are a lot of great free games that don’t get much attention but are still definitely worth your time. And we can all use a little spending break! After this review I got completely sucked into Warframe and put in 3 hours without even realizing it! I definitely recommend it, I think that and Barkley, Shut Up and Jam are my two favorites on this list (but completely different games!)
