AMD is Cutting Desktop CPU Prices

With the next generation CPUs around the corner from both AMD and Intel, we’ve learned that AMD is cutting desktop CPU prices yet again.  Savings range from 21% on the AMD A6-3600 to 9% on the AMD FX-8320 and include the A6, A8, Phenom, and FX series desktop CPUs.  We’ve compiled the list below, and compare the previous cost to the new cost.  Also we’ll cover the retail cost, as the costs listed below are for direct buyers from AMD, which means we’ll likely pay a little more.

At the time of writing this article the new pricing still isn’t reflected with popular retailers Newegg, or Amazon, however I’m sure we’ll see the lower cost trickle down soon as stock is depleted.  The only deal we saw below list cost direct from AMD was the A8-5600k BE, which was priced $1.01 below the updated list cost.  While the price cuts aren’t as generous as many of us would hope for, the price changes do bring a new cost savings to lower end and mid-range builds.  For instance, the FX-8320 is priced at a modest $153.  I’ve been using that CPU for the past 2 months, and have been able to overclock it from 3.5Ghz to 4.4Ghz on stock voltages with a closed loop water cooler.  In comparison to cost per performance, $153 is cheap for a near top end AMD CPU.

AMD CPU Price cuts

One can only hope that Intel will soon follow in the footsteps of the AMD CPU price cuts.  With the release of Haswell slated to be in June, I’m sure it’s not far around the corner, but when we still don’t know.

  1. I think he was talking more about the performance part. AMD is picking that up but just hadn’t quite gotten it done but I think they will get up to the same level at Intel eventually.
