AMD Radeon HD 7990 GPU could be Discontinued this Quarter

I stumbled upon a report that is suggesting that the flagship card, the AMD Radeon HD 7990, is going to be discontinued this quarter. Now normally I read a lot of rumors and reports that have much speculation about what major companies plan to do for releasing product and sort of take them with a grain of salt but this particular report could be right. I have written an article about another rumor that does suggest that AMD will be releasing the Radeon HD 9000 series of GPUs this October.

Alright now the report about the AMD Radeon 7990 being discontinued comes to us from Overclockers.ru. The report is basically that AMD is slowly shutting down production and that they will barely have enough 7990’s to last though September which would go awesome with the supposed timeline of October introducing the AMD Radeon HD 9000 series Volcanic Island graphics cards.

The AMD Radeon HD 7990 was introduced earlier this year at the end of April and if the report from Overclocker.ru is correct then the 7990 would have a very short shelf life of about 6 months and for a flagship cards that isn’t long at all and if a new flagship card is just waiting around the corner then I could see AMD going ahead and ramping down production to make room for the new GPUs.

So in a nutshell it does look like the AMD Radeon HD 9000 series could very well be released in October since the rumors and reports of other things that have to do with the possible release of a new series including this report of the AMD Radeon HD 7990 being discontinued this quarter could mean good things to us consumers looking for a new card. The only thing left I want to know about the new series other than official specifications is if the amazing game bundles that come with AMD cards will be attached to the new series.
