AMD TressFX 2.0 Expands and Performance Improvements

AMD TressFX 2.0, is being released and expanding on what AMD and Crystal Dynamics achieved with Tomb Raider. AMD TressFX (the original) released last year with Crystal Dynamics’s Tomb Raider that showed the ability to render and simulate thousands of strands of hair for more realistic movements as you can see from the picture below.

What does AMD TressFX 2.0 have to offer?

The new TressFX 2.0 will not only do hair but fur and grass. AMD has also said that addition research will go into expanding TressFX even further. Now the improvements to TressFX 2.0 also is better performance and easier integration into games. Basically TressFX 2.0 will be able to integrate better into games with less of a frame hit with the same performance as its predecessor TressFX.

“TressFX is AMD’s realistic hair rendering technology which renders and simulates the physics of thousands of individual strands of hair. It was first used in Crystal Dynamic’s Tomb Raider, released earlier this year. Now AMD is introducing TressFX 2.0, a newer version of TressFX with better performance and easier integration into games. Additionally research is now being done to use TressFX for other things besides hair, like grass and fur. In this talk we will cover how TressFX rendering and physics works, the improvements made in TressFX 2.0, and the research which will be used in future products.”

Below is a video demonstrating TressFX.
