AT&T to Build Gigabit Network in Austin Texas
AT&T to Build Gigabit Network in Austin Texas by next year. AT&T announced that they will be building an advanced fiber optic infrastructure network in Austin, Tx. Google has recently has confirmed they would be building their own 1 Gbps network. Google expects their network to be in place by next year and starting services by mid 2014.
AT&T is based in Dallas, Tx so one could assume anyone encroaching on their home territory would not be able to do anything without a fight. The only thing this means is Austin has become a very lucky city because Austin is about to be the only city of America with not one but two choices of who consumers would like to go with for internet and TV services on a gigabit fiber network.
Pricing has not been announced but it hopefully will be in the same price range as Google plans to offer. Residents of Austin should be rejoicing right now.
From AT&T’s News page:
“Most encouraging is the recognition by government officials that policies which eliminate unnecessary regulation, lower costs and speed infrastructure deployment, can be a meaningful catalyst to additional investment in advanced networks which drives employment and economic growth,” said Randall Stephenson, AT&T chairman and CEO.
“Today, AT&T announced that in conjunction with its previously announced Project VIP expansion of broadband access, it is prepared to build an advanced fiber optic infrastructure in Austin, Texas, capable of delivering speeds up to 1 gigabit per second. AT&T’s expanded fiber plans in Austin anticipate it will be granted the same terms and conditions as Google on issues such as geographic scope of offerings, rights of way, permitting, state licenses and any investment incentives. This expanded investment is not expected to materially alter AT&T’s anticipated 2013 capital expenditures.”

Why not just Verizon? They have had these capabilities for a while where you live.
AT&T has thoroughly #$%^%$ me again and again, charging me for bogus s*** and slowing my internet speeds based on my high usage. I pay $55 just for 24Mbps and even then, I only get 19Mbps out of it…
I wouldn’t go back to them even if they had fiber optic lines. You guys realize you already have a fiber line in your backyard of Lewisville?
Verizon has fiber optics in Keller, Denton, Flowermound, Colleyville, Grapevine, Southlake, Lewisville, Irving, and Plano. They also don’t charge you fees for services never rendered. I went from them to ATT when I moved out here to Fort Worth. Forth worth sadly has no Fios. Charter is my current best option in Fort Worth. Moving to Colleyville with the gf when all is said and done here and getting Verizon again.
Oh man, I didn’t bleep my first expletive… I’m very sorry.
True that Verizon has fiber but the prices to get their upper tiers are ridiculous. Time Warner technically can give you 1 Gbps down to office building since they put a fiber network in Dallas but they want anywhere from $800 to $2000 a month for it. The great thing about Google is the price is right.
When I had Uverse in at my old house I never had an issue with it. While I was paying for 24 down and only saw about 22 I never had issues. Just remember the fiber network for AT&T isnt completely fiber. Its fiber to the VRAD (box that supplies Uverse for your neighborhood) and copper from there. That is why they have not been able to offer more than 24 down. Sucks you had issues with them because I really liked Uverse and even more than Verizon. Then again I used to work for AT&T in the field and ran all my own stuff in the house and had the tech run new lines from my ped to the house to make sure I was getting the correct signal.
Also I fixed it for ya there Lyingheart 🙂
I’d love to have this kind of service, but I don’t expect to see it in the small Virginia town where I live.
Austin is indeed a very lucky town.
I pay $171.04 a month after the factor all the equipment fees and whatever other fees. I only have U300 TV, unlimited calling land line, and the 24Mbps internet.
If I went Verizon, I would just drop the TV and make due with using only my cell. They offer 300Mbps for $200. I mean… cmon
I dont even have HBO…. I use my brother’s HBOGO.
Sounds about what I used to pay. I think I paid 167 for 24 megs down and u300 without premiums. I am curious to what AT&T will charge in Austin.
I wish I would have stayed in Austin now…I miss that city so much.
exactly what google wanted to happen! this is great news!
Man, just another reason to live in Austin. I’m willing to bet The City of the Rat (Orlando, Fl) will be one of the last ones for Google 🙁
