Battlefield 4 Single Player Gameplay Trailer Released

In case you missed it, right after the E3 multiplayer release video, EA & Microsoft released a Battlefield 4 single player gameplay trailer.  We take a look at the video an analyze what we see new, changed, or just downright awesome.

Battlefield 4 Single Player Gameplay Trailer

So right off the bat I noticed a few things in the battlefield 4 single player gameplay trailer, that were similar to BF3 gameplay.  The gun mechanics seem the same, I don’t really see a huge difference here.  Seems they kept up with the accurate shooting mechanism rather than making BF4 a run n’ gun.  The lasers seem to be unchanged, at least in the blinding aspect (the only portion we see).  Also, it doesn’t look like you can cook off grenades still, however they did add in the “aim” using your non-throwing hand.  Other than that though, everything else seems to be improved or at least changed.

  • One thing I noticed immediately was the sound quality of Battlefield 4.  Some things sound the same, but the guns seem to sound a heck of a lot better.  Also, the UI has been changed, it looks much more simpler now.
  • More grenades!  The character in the Battlefield 4 single player gameplay trailer has 6 grenades.
  • Flashlights don’t look nearly as blinding as they did in BF3.  They actually seem to remain just as functional though.  It’s really difficult to make out the enemies silhouette when he’s shooting. (:51-:59)

Looking directly into a flashlight

  • The lasers appear to be unchanged, however much less effective in blinding you than the flashlight. (:52-:104)
  • Did they add in a language filter?  At 1:09 in the Battlefield 4 single player gameplay trailer, one of the soldiers says “This missions is a fu disaster from the beginning to end”.  Not sure if he likes emphasizing FU, or if they put a filter in here. (1:09)
  • Dual scopes.  We saw this in the earlier gameplayer trailers, as well as in the multiplayer.  I just noticed frequent usage of it here in the single player campaign.  Nothing really special, but it makes me wonder if there is any benefit to not having dual scopes, or maybe some other option?
  • Rag dolls seem to be improved.  I tried looking for other instances of this, but 3:05 to 3:09 was really the best.  The animations here show improvement over the current Battlefield rag doll animation.  Also, watching them jump from the carrier as it splits in half appears to show better character animation as well.  Well… at least you’ll look good when you’re jumping to your soon to be death. (3:05 – 3:09)

Rag dolls appear to just fall in the direction they’re shot or are moving.

  • Interactive environments possibly in Battlefield 4?  This may be exclusive to the battlefield 4 single player campaign, however throughout the single player trailer, the character shoots a lot of objects that cause other objects to become interactive.  For instance at  2:31 he shoots some barrels which then cause the jet to roll across the enemies.  Then at 3:53 we see him release a missile that appears to be stuck on some barrels he shoots, which then causes it to roll into the enemies and explode. (Jet kills enemies 2:31, Causes missile to roll, then explode 3:53)

Jet crashes across the carrier after he shoots the barrels.

  • The last part of the video starting at 4:40, shows us what amphibious warfare in Battlefield 4 may be like.  They appear to be in a speed boat of some sort that shots 30MM high explosive rounds and carries 4 people.  Also, they have some sort of ability called “Iron Fist”.  A quick skip over to Wikipedia tells us this:

“It senses incoming threats via a fixed radar sensor developed by RADA Electronic Industries and an optional passive infrared detector developed by Elbit’s Elisra. When a threat is imminent, an explosive projectile interceptor is launched towards it. The interceptor explodes very near the threat, destroying or deflecting and destabilizing it without detonating its warhead. For this, only the blast effect of the explosive is used. The interceptor casing is made of combustible materials so no fragmentation is formed in the explosion, helping minimize collateral damage.”

It appears that one soldier will be the main gunner, two soldiers will be rear gunners on mounted machine guns, and of course the driver.

Overall, I’m rather pleased with the Battlefield 4 single player gameplay trailer.  I think Dice/EA did a fine job at displaying the features in Battlefield 4, and it looks like we might have a solid single player campaign on our hands.  If anyone notices something I missed (like how the aircraft breaks into separate pieces when sliding across the carrier), let us know!

Battlefield 4 is scheduled for PC release on October 29th, 2013.  The digital deluxe version is only available from Origin.
