Explore, Craft, Interact, and Survive
Explore: Uncover rewards… or danger
A new map is generated every time the game is started. Each map is unique, where the terrain, creatures, animals, and everything else is placed randomly. Nothing is set in place, making exploration a big part of the game.
Throughout the world, there are various types of terrains, from plains, forest, swampland, desert, or rock. Depending on the terrain the amount and type of resources vary. Trekking around the rock terrain, wood or twigs might become scarce to start a fire. Traveling around the map can be difficult at certain types, running out of resources. Wandering into unknown parts can be deadly, running out of resources and food.
Discover creatures and animals while traveling around the map. Some are docile, while other attacked ferociously. Sooner or later, these creatures and animals must be slaughtered for their valuable resources.
Craft: Craft to survive
To conquer certain obstacles and progress in the game, Don’t Starve implements a crafting system. Resources, wood, stone, gold, food, etc. are located all over the map. In the beginning only certain resources can be collected without any tools. Collect these to start crafting simple tools, such as shovels, spears, and axes. Use an axe to cut down a tree for wood and pines cones, shovel to dig up graves, and spears to fend off creatures. Tools are an essential part of surviving the world. The items and tools which can be crafted will become more advance. With advance tools, the resources needed may become more rare and harder to collect. For example, crafting a fishing pole will require twigs and silk. Spiders and their liar are the source for silk. Collecting silk is not that easy. To obtain silk, kill the spiders and destroy their lair. There are several ways to achieve this goal… Find the easiest or the best that suits you.
Interact: Click and learn
Armed with tools and the determination to explore, go forth and discover. Just about everything in the game can be interact with each other. Some of these interactions are pretty easy to figure out. Equip an axe, cut down trees. Hold a torch, pine trees can be ignites. Others can be ascertained by trial and error. The fire produced from the burning pine tree can soon spread to other burnable objects around it. Learning how everything is connected is the key to surviving.
Survive: Sounds easy enough…
Keep in mind that goal of the game is to survive. To be able to do this a good balance of the lather key points must be implemented. Explore too much, food and items might become scarce leading to death. Don’t Starve will throw a few curveballs along the way, which will definitely make it harder to survive.
