Conclusion and Final Thoughts
Don’t Starve has created a simple game filled with hours of game play. Although the main objective is to get out of the world, it seems mute to the matter of fact that you have to survive first. It has become bragging right on how long players can survive the game.
The game never gets old thanks to its random world generator and cast of characters. Both bring a fresh start, where players will need to rethink how they will play the game each time.
Although the game is pretty solid, developers and modders are continuing to add a breath of fresh air. The game has been out for less than 6 months, and it is already getting better. This shows dedication and the continual growth of the game. I’m sure you and I are to enjoy this game for months to come.
Pros:
- Simple but complex: Playing a couple of minutes, it is easy to master the basic concept of the game. Explore, Craft, Interact, and Survive. Progressing further, players will need a certain level of curiosity. Players will need to pay attention and “leave no stone unturned” to be able to survive. The complexity of how everything interacts and affect each other are mind boggling in this little game.
- Randomize and customizable world: Every time a new map is generated, during Sandbox and Adventure mode. Each one is refreshingly new from the ones before. For those who think they have mastered the game, head on over the map customization game. This will allow for some crazy customization, making it harder to survive.
- Array of different characters: Wilson is the starting character. As you progress in the game, experience points are collected every time you die. These experience points go towards in unlocking new characters to play as. Each character has unique attributes which drastically changes how the game is played.
- High replay value: With the Don’t Starve unique maps and characters, it is unlike that players will have the same experience each time they start a new game.
- More to come: Since its release, the developers have added more to the game. They are still working on expanding the game even more.
Cons:
- High learning curve: There is no doubt deaths are inevitable in games, Don’t Starve does not differ. Due to its complexity, cause of death will most likely be curiosity. Deaths are very common, even in replaying the game. Don’t fear, with death comes with rewards, in the form of experience points towards new characters.
- No controller support: This game is ripe for SteamBox and controller support.
