The Empire of Activision Blizzard in 2014

Activision Blizzard generated a few whispers of interest since Blizzcon 2013, when they announced not just two expansions for their popular games, but two more game releases for 2014.  Hearthstone, the online card playing game mirroring traits from World of Warcraft (WoW), has developed its own set of devote followers, earning  itself a dedicated tournament time slot at Blizzcon –  astoundingly, the game’s still only in beta.

And that’s just scratching the surface for Activision Blizzard’s golden year of 2014-2015.

Warlords of Draenor

The announcement of the ever-anticipated WoW expansion, Warlords of Draenor, was met with roaring applause.  Though sadly, rumors are flying that players will be forced to endure another 5-7 months of Siege of Orgrimmar, as the expansion isn’t likely to hit shelves until mid summer or early fall.  Why hold out on the expansion that’s sure to revamp lost subscriptions?  It’s simple – business and money.

Hearthstone recently went to open beta earlier this past week.  Diablo III: Reaper of Souls, the first expansion for the latest Diablo game, is expected to come out March 2014.   That gives Blizzard a few months of reaping the monetary benefits of an excited player base before releasing other new content, which puts the release of Warlords of Draenor releasing in June-July 2014.

Destiny and StarCraft II

Let’s not forget about the recent 10-year exclusive partnership between Activision Blizzard and Bungie, the powerhouse of Halo, Myth, and Marathon.  Blizzard will now have their hands dipped into the projected – and likely lucrative – success of Destiny.  And falling right into schedule, Destiny is slated for release in September 2014.  Though much hasn’t been released about the confirmed expansion StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void, some trickled rumors indicated we’ll see the expansion by the end of 2014, perhaps in December.  However, considering Blizzcon is likely to be in November (as it has been since its début), its questionable why Blizzard would choose to table StarCraft II new expansion.  The StarCraft tournament at Blizzcon is perhaps the most anticipated and lively event at the convention that brings in over 20,000 Blizzard fans.

Well, Blizzard fans, 2014 is your year!
