Is Google Fiber coming to a city near you?
Its been awhile since any real news about where Google Fiber may strike next for a while. With Google Fiber in the works for Austin, Texas and already in Kansas City and Provo, UT . AT&T has promised a gigabit internet service in Austin to compete with Google in its own backyard. While the list of potential expansion cities for Google Fiber would all take a while to actually bring service to those areas. If you happen to fall in one of these cities when consider yourself lucky and head over to the Google Fiber page to stay up to date.
Now having said all of this I am still waiting for Google to compete directly with the likes of AT&T, Verizon, Comcast, and Time Warner Cable. Living in the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex and the heart of where AT&T is located (downtown Dallas) I look forward to when Google competes in the bigger markets. I know all to well working in the telecommunications industry that it could be quite awhile before a gigabit network is built up here. If and when this happens I would be just as happy with AT&T but until then I keep holding out for a Google Fiber expansion to get to me.
If you are asking why Google hasn’t chosen your particular city or metropolitan area then just remember that more goes into building a network than just flipping a switch. Google looks at how they can lay their lines (aerial or underground), can they use an existing infrastructure like in Provo, topography, population density, and other considerations.
