Noctua offers Free Alternative Mounting for NH-L9a Cooler
Noctua has announced they will be sending users of the NH-L9a low profile cooler free of charge an alternative mounting solution. Noctua said that the new mounting option will not use a black plate which permits the installation of the NH-L9a cooler on AMD motherboards. This is being made available for AMD motherboards that have components in the area at the rear side that is reserved for the back plate.
This is what Noctua has said about why they are issuing this:
“The SecuFirm2™ mounting system of the NH-L9a complies strictly to the AMD specifications and guarantees 100% compatibility with mainboards that follow these specifications”, explains Mag. Roland Mossig (Noctua CEO).“We’ve been overwhelmed with the great press and customer feedback on this cooler, but unfortunately, some mini-ITX mainboards do not follow the AMD specifications, so the NH-L9a could not be installed on these. We have now designed an alternative mounting option and will provide the new parts to customers who need it free of charge.”
The NH-L9a’s original mounting system used a mounting back plate per AMD specification but after customer feedback they determined that the following motherboard’s are not compatible with it.
- ASRock FM2A75M-ITX
- ASRock FMA85X-ITX
These boards do use a stock back plate and have components on the rear side that reside in the area where according to AMD is reserved for the back plate. The new back plate according to Noctua is that the new alternative mounting hardware include four separate spacers instead of a back plate so the NH-L9a can be mounted without issues and does not interfere with the components.

To obtain an alternative mounting kit all you need to do is contact Noctua customer service with a scanned, photo, or electronic copy of invoice of both the NH-L9a cooler and incompatible AMD motherboard. Noctua also said they all NH-L9a cooler will now be sold with the alternative mounting hardware to make sure they are compatible with the incompatible motherboards.
