PCMark is Coming to Mobile Platforms

For those of you who like to test the real ability of your computer rigs I’m sure you are no stranger to Futuremark and their PCMark benchmarking software. If you love the software or consider yourself a benchmarking enthusiast then it is time to get excited. If you don’t know what the software does, it is a benchmark that runs a series of real-world tests on your computer to determine the precise performance and battery usage, giving you scores to determine how it compares to other computers. With much success in the past few days the new PCMark 8 Professional Edition has triggered the company to expand to new platforms. Soon it appears we will see a PCMark software download for iOS, Android, and Windows RT based mobile devices. Apparently the main purpose of the software will be to show the real data side-by-side between mobile competitors so that the consumer can see the real difference in device capabilities.

In a press release yesterday, Futuremark announced:

“Like its Windows counterpart, PCMark for mobile platforms will feature benchmark tests based on common use scenarios. By focusing on the activities and tasks that smartphone and tablet owners perform every day, PCMark mobile will provide a view of real-world system performance and battery life for modern mobile devices.”

The common use scenarios for mobile devices are typically opening simple apps and files, running videos, running audio, light gaming, and surfing the web. It is safe then to assume that this version of PCMark software will put devices through their paces with all of these uses and more. To make this possible, Futuremark will be working in cooperation with many large companies to address compatibility issues and necessary functions. They are pooling their resources together from the firms involved in their “Benchmark Development Program” to develop the new software.

Currently, the companies that Futuremark lists in its Benchmark Development Program are as follows:

Acer, AMD, Compal, Condusiv Technologies, Dell, HGST, HP, Intel, Lenovo, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Samsung, SanDisk, Seagate and Western Digital as members. The list seems pretty long already, but they aren’t stopping there. The press release also stated,

“Technology companies operating in the mobile industry are invited to apply for Benchmark Development Program membership now.”

Well, I don’t know about you folks, but if they sell an affordable app version of PCMark for mobile devices I think I’ll find myself buying it. This should be interesting for the rare handful of owners trying hard to get every last bit of power out of their mobile devices. Well, how do YOU feel about this news ModCrashers?
