Turn Your Geforce GTX 680 Into a GTX 770

If you really want to get ahead of the game, you can turn your Geforce GTX 680 into a GTX 770 in a few minutes.  A reddit user recently was able to switch the ROM by doing a simple BIOS flash on his GTX 680, thereby turning it into a CPU-Z recognized GTX 770.  The “upgraded” BIOS runs the GTX 680 at 1059Mhz Core, 1752Mhz memory, giving you a memory bandwidth of 224 GB/s.

If you’re familiar with flashing your GPU’s BIOS you can simply go here, download the BIOS and flash it over your current BIOS.  However, the guys over at TechPowerUp looked into the BIOS file and found that it appeared to be nothing more than a modified GTX 680 BIOS which just increased the clock, with a modified driver INF that simply makes the Geforce driver display the name “GTX 770”.  So while this isn’t truly changing your card into a GTX 770, the two cards will use the same GK104 chip, so the BIOS could likely be the difference between the GTX 680 and the GTX 770.  So this BIOS update could practically be the new GTX 770, save for a few minor performance changes i’m sure we’ll see with it’s release.

 

 

Reddit user “nvfan104” provided the community of this screenshot of his “upgraded” GTX 680.  Obviously we now know this is more like throwing some stickers on your rear windshield and claiming your car gets 100 more horsepower because of it.  Regardless, it is a fun little experiment, and you could probably convince a handful of people it’s actually a GTX 770, assuming you could create a  GTX 770 logo to cover up your GTX 680 logo.  There are some real performance gains here, however it should be noted that not all GTX 680’s are created equal therefore not all will be able to handle the increased clock speed.
