AMD Announces the HD 7990, Fastest GPU in the World

AMD Officially Announces the HD 7990 aka the Fastest GPU in the World

HD 7990

Today AMD came out and officially announced the HD 7990 ship date, package, and their benchmarks on the fastest GPU in the world.  While Nvidia fans may find it hard to believe, or possibly crushing to their poor souls that the Nvidia GTX Titan is no longer the leader, they’ll just need to eat up their pride for now.  No need give up on Nvidia yet though, the Nvidia 700 series is just around the corner.  For now though, the spotlight shall shine on AMD once again.

Official Release Information from AMD on the HD 7990

I’m not going to dive too deep into this since we’ve already covered the majority of this card when the specs were leaked earlier this week.  But let’s touch on what AMD has to say.  So far everything has been geared towards it’s performance over Nvidia cards and previous AMD cards, it’s ability to play games in 4k resolution, and its extremely low noise level.

  • Two specially-screened AMD Radeon™ HD 7900 Series GPUs, with a clockspeed of up to 1GHz.
  • 6GB of GDDR5 on a 384-bit bus, running at 6.0Gbps for 576GB/s of memory bandwidth.
  • A PCI Express® 3.0 PLX bridge to connect the dual ASICs in an internal AMD CrossFire™ technology configuration.2 This interconnect provides 48 lanes (96GB/s) of bandwidth.
  • Native support for up to five simultaneous displays integrated via AMD Eyefinity technology. Further support for up to six total displays is possible using DisplayPort 1.2 MST-enabled hubs or monitors.3
  • A shockingly quiet triple-fan cooler, which is not only quieter than the Titan or the GTX 690, but quieter than your average library.4 At 100% GPU load.
  • FUN FACT: The graphics chips on the HD 7990 GPU contain a combined 8.2 billion 28nm transistors. If you were to redraw the schematics by hand with a fine-tipped pencil, you would need a piece of paper larger than 172 American football fields!

AMD is very proud of their ability to keep this cards both cool and quiet.  To prove it, they showcased the noise level in comparison to other high end cards.

  1. AMD are really stepping up their gaming bundles. However, I think they are a bit too late to release the HD 7990 and this might decrease a little their sales
